I had not seen a tarp like this before. I used it in a storm this past weekend and it performed perfectly. No water entry at all. I stayed bone dry. Tentsmiths 14 hrs · When cutting out a batch of 8′ x 8′ oilskin tarps, we cut a whole batch 4 inches too short! plus the canvas was a little bit wide from the mill to start, so now we have a whole bunch of tarps that are 8'2″ wide but only 7'7″ long. And we did not notice until they were all stitched together!

Maybe heavier than absolutely necessary seeing as they started with 6.5oz cotton? You could probably get away with a lighter material for the shelter but for raingear I would guess 4 oz material might be pushing it. Just had a thought- Can my Tentsmiths Oilskin Tarp be used as a Watch coat/Match coat/Cloak/Rain poncho.FWIW stay away from oilskin tarps- they require maintenance, and the compound used to 'proof' them is petroleum oil based, so flammable. The smell might also prevent a proper nights rest, depending on the compound. Rip stop canvas or as others have stated- waterproofed duck canvas will be a better option.:thumb:

Tentsmiths makes a solid raincoat from cotton treated with an oil/wax finish. In winter, use a heavy wool layer that will act as insulation, such as the merino wool pants offered by Minus33. In general, nothing beats wool in cold-weather climates.
